We made the difficult decision to have Moon euthanized. His last day with us was yesterday, Apr 9, 2025. We are immensely grateful to the help many of you have provided us in caring for Moon, especially Lynx, ItsaZoo, and Sef.
For some background, Moon had improved in several aspects, and was eventually able to eat enough on his own to maintain a stable weight between 800 to 850 grams. But his ability to stand and walk did not improve, and became worse over time. Both of his rear legs, as well as his right front leg, appeared to have significantly reduced strength and/or flexibility. We've found that without the
rover, he would not stand for more than a few minutes, which meant he would not eat for more than a few minutes. With the rover, he would stand and eat, but would not (or could not) walk around. With or without the rover, he would try and fail to clean himself, which would always be difficult to watch. We attempted some light stretching exercises twice a day for 1-2 weeks, with no clear improvement. For his last few weeks, we kept him on his rover nearly 24x7, changing the gauze and cleaning him every 12 hours. Dr. B told us Moon's condition was worse than just arthritis, that it may have been degenerative neuropathy or another degenerative disease, and that he had no realistic chance of recovery.
We also never fully got Moon's diarrhea under control, though part of that was a decision to prioritize pain management (keeping his meloxicam dose high) and get him back on veggies. With that said, cimetidine, omeprazole, and/or loperamide may have helped to varying degrees. Other treatments that seemed less helpful in his case included metronidazole, kaolin-pectin, and bio-sponge. Though I'm uncertain about most of this.
Given his circumstances, we decided it was time for him to go. He had lived a long life of 7+ years, and we hope we made his time with us worthwhile for him.
