I would start with very small amounts of veggies that have some fiber.

I quit veggies due to Gidget’s gas bubble. Now I’m starting with frozen corn husk, which is basically forage. And baby lettuce that is more frilly at the edges. I’m sprinkling Benebac on the lettuce. No cucumber, tomatoes, bell peppers, or anything that can cause digestive issues.

Thanks ItsaZoo. Will try a small amount of silverbeet. And see how we go. Keep you posted. Up to now all she has had is Oxbow pellets and Timothy hay.

OK, mushy poops are back so back to hay and pellets. She is sneezing a bit like bubbly clear fluid from her nostrils, should I be more concerned than I am if at all possible as I am freaking especially as it is cold here. Thanks in advance.

Took Jewel to vet, she wanted to put her on AB's which I refused as Jewel already has soft poops I didn't want to upset her gut any further. Not many vets have dental X-ray machines or CT scan for a cavy so treatment is limited. She thought maybe Jewel had bordetella? So for now just using steam-Jewel has watery eye and nostrils both clear fluid.

She suggested vitamin C even though Jewel gets Critical Care and I was wondering if this one was OK? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20422526514 ... BM9vyY2fxh Or would health food shop be better? Don't think Pendalyte? is available here.

Plus I bought a nebuliser https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175539399713 how do I use it? It is for kids and adults comes with 2 masks and a medicine cup. Vet looking into medication that might go in there. Thanks in advance.

From what you described i dont think its bordetella bronhiseptica. irie has this for five years..but he s fiesty one he doesnt care. Ex-vet said he would probably die at age of 3 and he ll be 8 in october.;p

Vet can diagnose it with taking nasal discharge for bacterial culture(for better result when not taking AB), i would request it if you have somebody who can do it.

Symptoms include nasal discharge(chronic), eye discharge, sneezing....

Nothing helped us(Bactrim, Baytrill, Azithromicyn,.. except Gentamicin+saline solution nebulier...he only have to do it few times in his life when symptoms got worse).

For nebulizer you dont need mask..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL87skvK0tI

Good luck to both of you and hope someone will write some more..

https://azeah.com/guinea-pigs/respirato ... uinea-pigs

Actually, from what I’ve read about upper respiratory infections, bordetella and strep are two common ones. The bacteria are everywhere and usually don’t cause trouble until the animal is stressed.

If it were me, I’d want to be able to get my hands on an antibiotic in case things get worse.

What my vet did was put an approved prescription on Gidget’s medical record. If she got worse and needed antibiotics, I could call and the clinic could fill the Rx right away since it was already approved. It was a good thing he did that. Gidget got worse, the vet was at a different clinic, and I got my meds right away.

I inspected Jewel and Jay's feet today and to me it looks like they're got the starts of bumble foot. Since seeing vet 3 weeks ago have been using Burt's Bees Wax on all 8 paws but this does not seem to have made a difference. Jewel had a scab on one front paw. All 4 paws still very red on both pigs.

Vet suggested Lanolin but some ingredients in it not good for cavies. Am looking into vitamin E ointment. It mentions on GL to use a diluted solution of chlorhexidine then drying the foot and applying BNP twice daily. What ever I use they are NOT going to like it as they HATE their feet touched. It also suggests Baytril to kill any infection in the bone. But as Jewel still has mushy poops not keen on trying that. BUT poop soup appears to be working.

Happy to bring Jewel and Jay in if you wish. Give me 3 days notice as have run out of taxi vouchers and will need a ride from council. Prefer a dog free time that I can come in as find owners are very careless when it comes to their dogs.
For some reason not sure why but I have BNP in fridge. Been there for at least 12 months just not sure as to why it is in the fridge or who it was for. Thanks so much.

Would this be safe to use? https://www.superpharmacy.com.au/produc ... e723rVl0Tk

Has anyone used these Gentamicin(antibiotic) and Acetylcysteine(mucolytic) in a nebuliser on a guinea pig before? The Gentamicin rang alarm bells as ends in micin! My vet claims it has been used successfully on guinea pigs.

Jewel's bubbly breathing returned today, I had syringe fed her, then Jay getting poops from Jay to make Jewel's poop soup when she started to bubble breathe again. So for now back to breathing steam in saucepan-5 times for 5-10 seconds each time and I do this 4 times a day. Thanks in advance.

Went over my head BUT Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, is bactericidal. Gentamicin passes through the gram-negative membrane in an oxygen-dependent active transport. As oxygen is required, this is why aminoglycosides are not effective in anaerobic bacteria.

Seems Acetylcysteine is a human medication for human more than 6grams can be fatal.Acetylcysteine is in a class of medications called mucolytic agents. It works by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways.

Always a good idea to check the Merck veterinary manual, which references N-acetylcysteine.
https://www.merckvetmanual.com/pharmaco ... in-animals

A search of this board will turn up MANY references to gentamicin used in a nebulizer.

Sounds like a plan.
