Gentamycin works well in a nebulizer. The big advantage is that it's a strong antibiotic but doesn't affect the gut at all when nebulized. I've used it many times, along with various mucolytics.

And it's the -cillins you have to worry about, not the --mycins.

What about Terramycin? Was told it is fatal for guinea pigs yet years ago many of my piggies were being treated with it. And these so called vets were piggy specialist.

Thanks Lynx and bpatters. Both Jewel and Jay go to the vet Wednesday Australian time to get there feet looked at which the beeswax is not doing much.

I do have a few -mycins on the dangerous meds list. But as bpatters notes, inhaled, it is safer.

clindamycin
dihydrostreptomycin
erythromycin
lincomycin
streptomycin

Terramycin is used in eye ointments so it doesn't get into the digestive system unless you put too much on and they lick it off.

"Eye medications are considered topical and are generally safe so long as they are not ingested."

The way my piggies would get it was via injection. On another matter with the mushie poops and urine that Jewel is laying in the fur around private part is disappearing. Anything I can use to protect it? Both Jewel and Jay going to vet Wednesday due to bumblefoot. Hope I have better luck than we did with poor Joy. Thanks Lynx.

OK went to vets and both Jewel and Jay are in early stages of ulcers on their feet. Jay hind, Jewel front. Vet suggested using Ilium-Neocort. A small dab 1-2 times a day. Was wondering if anyone has used it? Currently using bees wax but vet said this makes foot soft where as he said we want paws hard. Appreciate any advice.

He also said for ulcers/bumblefoot first treatment is vitamin C supplement about 5mgs a day yet both are on Critical Care which has 10,000mgs/kgs. Jewel did get claws cut and nearly had lunch with vets hand but this time he was too fast. Weight 970g at a lost previously 1020g.

I have everything crossed been grabbing 20 or more of Jay's poops adding water and making poop soup. So far Jewel's poops solid 95% of the time sometimes small sometimes tear drops or sometimes normal shape and size.

On GL's Bumblefoot page it says to wrap paw/s up. What type of dressing? What if your pig is a foot chewer? Is this bandage suitable? Thanks. https://www.superpharmacy.com.au/produc ... -365m?cart

That looks like a really nice tape. It would be the tape you would use at the ankle so the gauze and stretchy vet wrap don't slip off.

Be sure to let the foot air daily.

The wrap I used on Nina is more for serious foot issues like open sores. See:
https://www.guinealynx.info/bandaging.html

Everything I know is on that page. It was a long time ago.

You asked this exact same question on two different posts. I am not going to reply twice. Asking on only one post is better.

It is because both Jewel and Jay are going through this. They each have a medical thread. Both have ulcers but they are all closed at present. They are healing with beeswax so might stay with that for now and see how they go. Thanks Lynx. I am also looking into soft bedding and putting hay in basket so they can walk on soft bedding.

We had a pig with really bad ulcerations on both hind feet. That's when we switched to fleece, at the vet's suggestion.

On our 1st visit, the vet sent her home with her feet bandaged and some stretchy fabric to wrap it so we could re-bandage it. The bandage never stayed on more than a few min.

That's why I used a "collar" around the ankle of non-stretchy tape so it could not be slipped off. Worked pretty well for Nina.

Today my sweet baby girl you left me 1 year today and my heart still aches for you. I was not with you in your final moments. Due to health restrictions and the fact I don't drive. For that I can never forgive myself. You bought me so much love and happiness. But you left me with so many memories.

I hope you were happy here, I did try. I still love you and always will. Till we meet again my dear licorice stick, till then I will take care of your sister Jewel my_little lioness. Take care baby girl Jinx Love and Miss you now and forever!
