Hi Maxine. I don´t feel £100 pounds is alot to spend considering the emotional investment we put into our furry friends. I don´t have alot of respect for anyone who feels it is not worth while spending this kind of money on a Guinea Pig. You will reap the benefits one hundred fold with our lovable furry buddies.

Thanks for the advice, after checking out the advice of several vets I found an experienced vet who specialises in small animals and Whisper is being spayed on Monday.

Good luck with Whisper on Monday and let us know how she gets on. We´ve noticed what looks like a hernia on Tabitha which has come up since the stitches were removed. Just a small lump but its on the incision line. Not hurting her at all and not increasing in size. Caroline (Tabby´s owner) has to take one of her other piggies to the same vet for removal of a cyst so will take Tabby back and ask what this lump is. It wasn´t there before the op, so a hernia seems like a likely explanation. It would be a shame if she had to be opened up again. Meanwhile, she´s doing fine. Back to her docile happy self and eating like a piggie! I agree that £100 is not a lot to spend to save your pet, but there are many people who think its way too much and also a lot of vets (here in the UK) who wouldn´t consider doing an operation on a guinea pig as its too risky. Luckily, we seem to have found a vet who is guinea pig knowleageable and used to keep them himself.

You seem to know me so well! How did you know about my hernia?

Whisper had her op on Monday and although she was very sleepy for a couple of days afterwards she´s doing fine now. She went back to the vet yesterday for her post op check and she´s now back outside with her half sister Sandy. The vet said that the cyst on her left ovary was exceptionally big and she had a smaller one on the right. She has disolveable stitches which should be gone in 2 weeks.

Do keep a close eye on the healing process (any signs of redness or warmth at the incision, how well she is eating -- feed her well and give extra vitamin C -- weigh frequently to make sure she is not going off her food). They are low to the ground and you don´t want her to pick up an infection. Did the vet prescribe antibiotics?

Teresa has some post op suggestions on her neutering page:
